Online gaming is predominately played over the internet. They range from simple text based games, to games that incorporate complex graphics, to the ultimate, virtual worlds, which are the multiplayer games. Many online games have become a social activity, with the addition of chat rooms and online communities. Players get to interact with each other while playing the same game live, increasing the level of competition and excitement. This also enabled the gamer to play alone, against many other people around the world, or join teams and play together in quest of their common goal… Winning!
Once Microsoft began packaging Flash as a pre-installed component of Internet Explorer, the internet began to shift direction, now offering on-demand entertainment. This enabled websites to offer games to web surfers. These online multiplayer games generated money in many different ways. Some charged a monthly fee for their services, others relied on advertising fees produced from on-site sponsors, while others let you play for free, but gave you the choice to pay to unlock new content.
Online gaming continued to improve over the years. During the 1990′s, it started out as First-person shooter. This is when the gamer experiences the action through the eyes of the shooter. As the internet started to grow, Real-Time strategy games began to become popular around the late 1990′s. These games were played over a modem or local network, allowing gamers from all over the world to play against or with one another. Players were automatically matched with other players or lobbies were formed where gamers could meet in specific rooms. These rooms were separated by the title of the game. IE: If you wanted to play Bejeweled, everyone in the room that you joined wanted to play Bejeweled. Now that consoles are acting more like computers, online gaming has expanded. Cross-platform online play is when a number of games are on one server, giving the game the ability to connect with people on PC’s as well as consoles.
With the continued advancements in online gaming, it continues to grow in popularity. The way that consoles and PC’s are getting more complex, is an advantage for online gaming to continue to grow in performance, graphics and world popularity. The sky is the limit for this industry and I just can’t wait to see what online gaming has in store for us in the near future. For all us gamers, it is an exciting thought!
